YZ85 gets makeover for 2019
What was previously Yamaha’s entry-level motocross machine – a position now occupied by the YZ65 – the MY19 YZ85 is almost entirely new. In a spec sheet comparison against the current version, the 2019 YZ85 may not seem different, but it features a completely redesigned engine, modified transmission, new suspension and new brakes, to name a few of the changes.
The tubular steel cradle frame is the same, but virtually everything attached to it is new, starting with the engine that now features the Yamaha Power Valve System (YPVS) applied to larger Yamaha two-strokes.

Engine Makeover Adding YPVS to the 85cc 2-stroke single delivers more power across the rev range, but especially at higher revs. The engine crankcase is new, adding a spacer-style reed valve intake for better fuel flow and smoother throttle response, although the 28mm Keihin carby is the same as the current YZ85.
The cylinder head is an all-new design, too, adding a longer connecting rod that boosts the compression ratio from the previous 8.1:1 to 8.2:1 (and 9.6:1 in some applications).
A high-flow airbox has been added and the exhaust’s expansion chamber is new, optimising power delivery through the low- and mid-range. The radiator has been updated with larger cores and louvres, while the water pump replaces the resin impeller with an aluminium version for what’s claimed to be improved cooling efficiency.
The 6-speed transmission remains, but the actual gears are now wider for what Yamaha says is enhanced gear engagement and smoother shifting.

Suspension Makeover The 36mm KYB front end offers compression and rebound adjustability, as well as 275mm of travel, but the USD fork now also features one-piece outer tubes and new internal settings, aimed at improving suspension performance across a range of conditions.
At the back, the Kayaba rear shock is a link-type design to improve bottoming resistance. Compression and rebound adjustability, plus 282mm of travel, is standard, but like the front end, spring rates and internals have been updated to improve bump absorption and bottoming resistance.
The rear shock is hooked up to a redesigned swingarm that adds a new chain guide and updates the chain adjusters for easier servicing.

Wheel and Brake Makeover, plus new Ergos The upcoming YZ85’s wheels (17-inch front, 14-inch rear on the regular YZ85, 19-inch and 16-inch on the big-wheel YZ85 LW) are a new lightweight design to suit the improved suspension performance. In selected markets – that will likely include Australia – Dunlop MX35 tyres will be standard fitment.
Brake discs are the same 220mm front and 190mm rear diameter as the current YZ85, but are now in a wave-pattern design that improves self-cleaning and reduces heat build-up in race conditions. Combined with this, the front brake line is new, offering improved feel.
Finally, the adjustable handlebar mounts that are part of the YZ65 specification will also be added to the YZ85 for 2019. With the choice of four positions, handlebar reach can be easily adjusted to suit growing kids.
The new Yamaha YZ85 is due for Australian release in August. Local pricing will start at $6,799 RRP for the standard model and $7,399 RRP for the LW version (both prices include GST).
