Yamaha Tricity concept unveiled in Brisbane
Similar to the MP3 three-wheeler unveiled by Piaggio back in 2008, Yamaha says the Tricity is the first of a number of affordable, agile, compact, light and practical new models, adding that the Tricity may become the new 'standard city commuter'.
Taking a similar tack to the thinking that resulted in the MP3, Yamaha believe that the Tricity's three-wheel layout is a more confidence-inspiring design, while the fun-to-ride character will open the door to non-scooter riders who are looking for an alternative method of urban transport.
Yamaha call their take on the two-wheels-forward one-wheel-back concept a Leaning Multi-Wheel (LMW) vehicle, but say their machine has followed a completely different development path in comparison to the MP3 and other 3-wheel models currently available.
The Tricity is significantly lighter and much more compact than existing 3-wheel models, according to Yamaha, who believe its agility and easy-handling character will make it attractive to a wide range of existing scooter riders as well as non-riders who have yet to enter the scooter world.
The key objectives of Yamaha's design team in creating the Tricity were agility, compactness, lightness, practicality and affordability. With an approximate weight of only 150kg, the Tricity is comparable to a small to medium sized 125cc two-wheel scooter.
Overall size - including the width of the two front wheels - is compact, allowing the rider to enjoy optimum manoeuvrability in dense city traffic.
The new Tricity is powered by a 125cc 4-stroke engine with auto transmission that offers the best balance of performance, economy and weight.
There is a generous storage compartment beneath the flip-up dual seat that is the ideal place to carry a helmet or provisions.
Pricing and full specs are yet to be revealed, but Yamaha says the Tricity will be priced to be the most competitive model in its class and less than what a year's public transport would cost.
More details about release timing and pricing will be revealed closer to release. Australian availability has yet to be confirmed.
