Yamaha Super Tenere upgraded for 2014
The standard XTZ 1200 has received upgrades to the big 1200cc twin, including larger inlet and exhaust valves, revised camshaft and piston ring design, as well as a new exhaust system. Combined, these improve performance, delivering smoother engine operation, and a claimed extra 1.5kW - 83kW vs 81.5kW on the old model.
Controlling this is an enhanced 'D-Mode' engine mapping system, which delivers more relaxed running in 'T' (Tour) mode and sharper high-speed performance in 'S' (Sport) mode. Cruise control is also standard on 2014 models, while there's a new rubber shock absorber in the clutch assembly and improved engine-housing damper design for the shaft drive.
Also new for 2014 is LCD instrumentation, along with a new 4-position windscreen, new handlebars, LED indicators, seat, tail cover, under-headlight protection, and sidestand.
The new-for-2014 XTZ 1200E takes all these upgrades and adds electronically-controlled suspension adjustment, allowing suspension changes to be made on the go.
Four basic preload and three damping settings are selectable via a handlebar-mounted switch, with an additional seven levels allowing up to 84 different settings for finite adjustment - on the go - of the suspension to suit road conditions and on-bike loads.
In addition to the electronically-controlled suspension, the 'E' model's price premium over the standard model also adds heated grips, suede-look seatcover, top base case, assist grip, main stand and hand protectors.
Rollout of the Super Tenere XTZ 1200 and XTZ 1200E started in April, with the standard model retailing for $19,990 and the 1200E for $21,999 (both prices exclude ORCs). See your Yamaha dealer for further details.
