VMOTO Monte Carlo 150. May 2008
The Monte Carlo offers rider and road-friendly features like an electric starter (with kick start backup), CVT automatic transmission, telescopic fork front suspension and disk front brake, all wrapped in a very modern, distinctively-styled body that's sure to appeal to scootering traditionalists and newcomers alike.
The body features some neat and clever design features, like the turn signals that have been incorporated into the leg shield to minimise damage in the event of an accident.
The fuel filler, located under the seat, directs any overflow away from the underseat storage area - another nice touch.
The Monte Carlo's 4 stroke 150cc single means it's got plenty of the acceleration required for the urban environment, while the 102kmh top speed makes it viable for arterial road and short highway runs, too.
The 5.2lt fuel tank offers adequate range and the sort of real fuel economy that many scooter buyers look for.
Speaking of economy, Vmoto have kept the economics of scooter purchase down, too, with an RRP on the Monte Carlo of $2,990.
The frame lacks a flat footwell, but the tradeoff is a more rigid chassis that, in combination with the suspension and 12" wheels, offers very reassuring handling, with the ability to soak up a lot of bumps.
This setup also makes for more confident cornering, with a surprising amount of safe lean angle achievable - if that's what floats your boat!
The rear brake is best suited for mid-corner stability or scrubbing off speed when used in isolation, but when combined with the single rotor/single piston front brake, can really pull the Monte Carlo up in a hurry.
Not every style of helmet will fit in the underseat storage, so if you're planning on using the Monte Carlo as your daily commuter, or for regular shopping trips, the optional topbox would be a recommended addition.
The seat itself is comfortable for both rider and passenger, and would suit all but the smallest of riders. Handgrips are also comfy, and the mirrors are big enough to offer good rear vision.
The instrument cluster is dominated by a large, central speedo, with a fuel gauge (with a handy low-fuel light) to the left, and high beam indicator to the right - although some aficionados may want to fit an aftermarket clock to this space.
Vmoto have also thought of scooter security, with both a remote alarm and immobiliser fitted as standard.
The Monte Carlo is now available from all Vmoto dealers. www.vmoto.com.au

Monte before the Monte
Visitors to last year's Australian Motorcycle Expo in Melbourne got a sneak preview of the Monte Carlo 150, with a model (pictured right) displayed on the Vmoto stand.
JUST BIKES had a chat to Vmoto's Tanwyn Travers at the show and remarked on the eye-catching, matt black 'stealth' finish of the Monte Carlo - unaware that it was still a development model and that the final production version (main picture) would have a brighter, glossier look!
We were quite taken by the subtle, low-vis look of the Monte Carlo in basic black and reckon a production version of the Monte Carlo in this finish - yes, there is one available! - is a real winner. What do JUST BIKES readers think?
