Suzuki reveal 2015 RM-Z 450
Following its success in the hands of Matt Moss in both the Australian MX Nationals and Supercross championships, the new, 2015 version of Moss's RM-Z 450 is expected to deliver even more success.
Unveiled on May 16 in the US, the new RM-Z 450L5 features the 'SFF' (Separate Function Fork) front suspension, 'Holeshot Assist Control' launch control, a redesigned frame, redesigned starting system with longer kicker, and the EFi coupler that Suzuki pioneered in the motocross field.
Holeshot Assist
The new Holeshot Assist Control technology features two modes, both designed to give a smooth, powerful start when the gate drops. The system is the same as that used on James "Bubba" Stewart's RM-Z 450 in AMA MX competition in the USA.
Operated from a button on the left handlebar, the two modes - A Mode and B Mode - are differentiated by a flashing light, with a slow flash for A and fast flash for B. The system disengages automatically, returning to normal ignition timing after a specific time, or in a certain gear, whichever comes sooner.
In "A Mode", Holeshot Assist Control delivers smoother throttle response for enhanced traction and less wheel slip on hard-packed or slippery conditions. After 1.2 seconds, or once third gear is reached, the system disengages.
"B Mode" is designed for use in conditions where there is more traction, producing a more aggressive throttle response for quicker takeoffs. B Mode disengages after 4.5 seconds, after shifting into fourth gear, or when you roll off the throttle, whichever comes first.
Air Fork front suspension
First used on Suzuki race bikes in the US, the Showa SFF Air Fork front suspension is standard on the 2015-spec RM-Z 450.
Replacing the traditional springs with a series of three air chambers for reduced weight and easier adjustability to suit differing track conditions, the SFF-Air delivers more progressive suspension feel, as well as offering infinite adjustability and reduced weight - almost 1.15kg (2.5 pounds) compared to the previous spring suspension.
Adjustments to the SFF-Air fork can easily be made with a hand pump.
Easier Kickover
To make cold and warm starting easier, Suzuki engineers redesigned a number of components in the starting system.
The most notable change is the longer (by 30mm) kick lever, but there are also revised kick-gear ratios, updated de-compression system, and a redesigned exhaust camshaft, amongst others.
Combined, these changes make the 2015 RM-Z 450 easier to start, saving time and energy for riding.
Greater Cooling
The new RM-Z 450 also features an improved cooling system. Suzuki claim a 16-percent improvement in cooling efficiency thanks to more effective fluid travel between right and left radiator halves. An updated water-pump cover and revised hose connection directing coolant directly into the water-pump are other features.
Revised Frame and more
While the same basic frame layout is unchanged for 2015, the downtube has been redesigned, as has the mainframe, for greater rigidity. The race proven EFI Coupler system includes two plug-in couplers to make adjustments to engine mapping easier.
Other race-spec componentry as standard for 2015 includes wave disc rotors, a Renthal Fat Bar handlebar and Excel rims.
Deliveries of the 2015 Suzuki RM-Z 450 start from July, with Australian motocrossers able to get their hands on one in early 2015.
