Charpentier went on to win the race from Winston Ten Kate Honda team mate Kenan Sofuoglu and thus become the first rider to win the championship two times.
"I just don't know what to say," shrugged Curtain. "It all seemed too good to be true and we came back to reality with a bang. That's my first race crash of the year and I just can't believe that it had to happen today."
Curtain's team mate Broc Parkes, who saw his own title hopes end after a heavy accident three rounds ago at Assen, stayed with the Ten Kate Hondas for the opening part of the race before slipping back to third. Sofuoglu set a new lap record early in the race, a pace that the still-injured Parkes couldn't match. However, Sofuoglu slowed later in the race to allow Charpentier to take the win as well as the championship.
