Rare Vespa for Shannons Melbourne Winter Auction
Developed as a commercial variant to the Vespa scooter, and a cheaper alternative to a car, the three-wheeled 'Ape' (pronounced 'ah-peh' - Italian for 'bee') was introduced in 1948. Basically a standard scooter from the seat forward, the engine (in this instance a 150cc 2-stroke) drove the two rear-wheels via a chain and utilised a specially-designed rear suspension system.
Available in tray and van versions, but able to be modified to suit specific load-carrying requirements, the Ape was popular in Europe throughout the '50s, with 'B' and 'C' versions released through the decade. The unit consigned with Shannons is a '56 model, the year the 'C' upgrade was introduced, with the main difference being a closed cab for the driver/rider.
In the vendor's possession for the past fifteen years, the Ape received an engine rebuild ten years ago, followed by a more recent rebuild of the brakes, new tyres, and repairs to the roof and rear tray.
Finished in blue & white and trimmed in blue vinyl, Shannons predict this rare classic Vespa could be put to use as a mobile food or coffee vendor. Guiding range is $10,000 - $14,000.
Also consigned for this auction are a 1964 Czech-built Cezeta Type 502 scooter, which is being offered at No Reserve (guiding range $3,000 - $5,000), a C1954 MV Agusta 125cc Pullman (guiding range $10,000 - $14,000), C1959 Triumph Tiger 100 (guiding range $12,000 - $16,000), and belt-drive C1923 Condor 250 (guiding range $12,000 - $15,000).
