Phillip island Circuit honours Jack Miller
Following sections of the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit that have been named in honour of Wayne Gardner, Mick Doohan and Casey Stoner, the Victorian track now has a corner named after Jack Miller.
On the Saturday of this year’s Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, a special ceremony saw Turn 4, known to many as Honda Corner or Honda Hairpin, re-named Miller Corner.
The tight right-hander is one of the prime overtaking spots on the 4.448km seaside circuit, seeing many overtakes, battles for position - and crashes - over the years.
When Long Lap penalties were introduced to MotoGP three years ago, Turn 4 became the spot on the Phillip Island circuit to receive that addition, adding to its potential to decide race results and even championships.
Joining Miller at the naming ceremony was his new wife Ruby, parents Peter and Sonya, Phillip Island circuit owner Andrew Fox, Mick Doohan and representatives of Dorna, IRTA and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.
“it’s an immense honour – the scale of it hasn’t really sunk in yet,” the 27-year-old said. “This is amazing – something I couldn’t even have dreamed of as a kid.
“To have a corner on this magical racetrack in my name is . . . more than words [can say].
“I’m so thankful to everyone that put it together. It’s an amazing feeling for myself and for the family.
“I remember coming here in my first time watching a grand prix, in 2009, and being able to sneak up and watch the boys coming out of [Turn 4} and ever since then, I’ve been hooked. From then on, that’s what I wanted to do.
“I remember back to the Moto3 race, the amount of dive bombs I put on [at this corner] and in MotoGP as well. It’s an unreal part of the track and so many historical moments have happened here.
“To be back here [now], having this honour, has just been amazing. I can’t even begin to describe the journey we’ve been on and what we’ve been through.
“I’ve been so fortunate in this sport and what it’s given back to me. I love the sport immensely and I’m thankful for everybody who’s put this together. They don’t really know how much it means to me to have [the corner] changed.”
