New Ducati 899 Panigale revealed
Unveiled by Ducati CEO, Claudio Domenicali, the smaller-capacity 899 has been created as "a new way to access the exclusive world of Ducati Superbikes", ie. an entry-level model to the larger, popular 1199 Panigale.
Based on the range-leading 1199 Panigale, the 899 is what Ducati call a "Supermid", straddling the gap between the 600cc-style Supersports machines and litre-class (and above) Superbikes. However, the 899 Panigale offers the "everyday" usability of a streetbike due the flatter, more usable torque curve in the downsized engine.
The 899 is powered by an all-new 'Superquadro' engine with a revised bore and stroke (100 x 57.2mm ) for a broad power delivery, producing 148hp (109kW) with torque of 73lb-ft (10.1kgm). The regular Marelli fuel injection, as fitted to the 1199, is replaced with a Mitsubishi system. The 899's engine, like its big brother, is a fully stressed member of the monocoque construction, delivering what Ducati call an outstanding power-to-weight ratio. Dry weight is 169kg (372.5lb).
The close-ratio six-speed gearbox, and a number of other parts are lifted directly from the larger 1199 Panigale, but unlike the larger bike, the 899 uses a double-sided swingarm. Front forks are Showa, brakes are Brembo, with four-piston monobloc calipers on the front twin discs.
Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) and the fully integrated Riding Mode technologies of Ride-by-Wire, triple-stage ABS (for Race, Sport and Wet riding), Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Engine Brake Control (EBC) are part of the 899 Panigale package.
Styling is akin with the 1199, underlining the family DNA, while the finish is in traditional Ducati red with black wheels or a stunning arctic white with red wheels.
The 899 Panigale will be released in late October, but Australian delivery times are to be confirmed.
