New additions to 2011 Super X programme
The Super X Club Challenge will run as a relay team race at every round and is open to any club and its riders (supercross endorsed) in Australia. Each team will consist of three riders; one Open, one Lites and one Under 19s, with points tallied from every round to crown the winning club at the series decider in Ipswich on November 19.
Based on the format of the incredibly popular 'Australia versus USA' team challenge from the 2010 Super X series, each team member will race one lap and will need to tag their next team mate before they can take off. There will be a $10,000 prize pool on offer for the winning team - $5,000 cash from GAS that will be matched by $5,000 from Monster Energy to go toward club development.
GAS Managing Director, Michael Porra, created the Club Challenge to allow clubs to get more involved and play a major part in the premier supercross series.
"I was inspired to introduce this challenge into Super X after seeing what a huge success a similar initiative in Australian surfing has been. The Surftag national title has really bought clubs back into professional competition and made its members proud to represent them. I have no doubt it will be just as successful in Super X, given the passion all of the riders have for their sport and riding community.
"It's going to produce some really exciting racing for fans and we know from past rounds that the crowd will get right behind the relay format."
Australasian Manager of Monster Energy, Adrian Hunter, was just as enthusiastic about the new initiative, and had no hesitation in offering up a significant prize.
"The Club Challenge is the perfect way to get everyone in the dirt bike community involved in the series and I know it's going to be a huge hit within the industry as well as provide some awesome entertainment for fans," said Hunter.
The other new addition to this year's Super X, thePit Bike Cup, came about from GAS fan research that showed an overwhelming interest in pit bike racing.
"The demand for pit bike racing has been crazy and I know it will produce some really exciting action for fans," said Porra.
"We are still finalising the details on how it will be run, but are really excited about it and all of the other great aspects of the championship this year."
These two new inclusions come on the back of the addition of the Under 19s class and the Monster Energy Kawasaki FMX Demo to the 2011 schedule, which will add a full hour of action to the official event programme at every race, making this year's Super X great value for money.
