McCoy and Moss triumph in the wet at 2011 Super X Round 2
The weekend's round marked the first time supercross had been held in Wollongong since 2008. Dry conditions for practice and the heats were turned on their head when the thunderstorm hit, 15 minutes before the finals in all classes. The conditions caused a 45 minute delay in proceedings. The storm caused the cancellation of the Under 19 and Michelin Junior Development Series finals, and the formats for the Opens and Lites final were changed to a 15 lap final in each class. It proved a masterstroke with two classic finals.
JDR Motorex KTM's Matt Moss took the holeshot in the Lites 15 lap final and never looked back, making it two from two wins in the series so far, and also taking a commanding lead in the Lites championship. Team Motul Pirelli Suzuki's Steven Clarke improved on his sixth place in round one to finish second and Moss' teammate Brendan Harrison rounded out the top three.
Unfortunately, two Lites title contenders failed to poll any points at Wollongong. Josh Cachia crashed out in the heats and Monster Energy's Kawasaki's Dean Ferris went down on lap one of the final before heading straight back to the pits.
Describing his formula for success in the slippery conditions, Moss kept it simple. "The track felt pretty grippy, so I decided to just pin it and win it."
In the Open class final, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Billy MacKenzie took the holeshot and led for the first six laps before going down in the slippery conditions. This opened the door for Team Motul Pirelli Suzuki's Daniel McCoy, who held the lead, despite close attention from JDR Motorex KTM's Dan Reardon, until the finish. Behind Reardon, hometown hero Jay Marmont, worked his way back through the pack after a disappointing start to finish in third. McCoy's result also moved the New South Wales rider into the championship lead, by one point from round one victor, JDR Motorex KTM's Tye Simmonds.
"To be honest I have never really enjoyed the mud," McCoy said afterward.
"With such a short series you need to be near or on the podium every week."
"I could hear the crowd screaming for me," Marmont said after the race.
"I didn't even know I finished third until I crossed the line. Please no rain next week!"
As their finals were cancelled, no points will be awarded for this round in both the U19's and Michelin Development Series.
Round three of Monster Energy Super X, the Australasian Supercross Championship, will take place at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday November 5.
