Marmont, Harrison win 2011 Super X Round 3
After two wet rounds to kick off the 2011 season, Campbelltown turned on a dry race, which enabled the star riders to shine and saw some high intensity racing across all classes. The Open and Lites classes both ran the 'Triple Header' format at Campbelltown, consisting of three races (7 laps for Opens, 6 laps for Lites) held in close succession.
In the first of three Lites finals, Carlton Dry Thor Honda's US import, Gavin Faith took the win, with JDR Motorex KTM's Matt Moss second and Serco Yamaha's Luke Styke third. Faith had shown impressive speed in the opening Super X rounds, but had his good work undone by crashes in the finals. In the dry conditions at Campbelltown, Faith finally realised his early potential.
There was a huge pile up on the first corner of the second Lites final taking out most of the field. JDR Motorex KTM's Brendan Harrison led the whole race to take the win, with Moss showing incredible speed to ride his way into second after a bad start. Luke Styke again finished third.
Monster Energy Kawasaki's Dean Ferris took the early lead in the third of the Triple Header finals and never looked back. Faith came second and Harrison third. Moss had bike problems on the first corner, putting him dead last and way behind. Once again he showed his trademark speed and climbed back to finish 10th.
Harrison's consistency saw him secure his first round win of the season, ahead of Faith in second, with Styke third.
"I am just so ecstatic to be up here and get the win," Harrison said.
"It has been a long time coming and it's so good that all of my hard work and the team's have finally paid off. I just want to keep my head down and go racing and I am confident I can be at the pointy end of the championship standings."
The first of the Triple Header races in the Open class started well for Team Axis 07 Motorsports rider, Cody Mackie, who got the holeshot, but crashed whilst in the lead. This left Monster Energy Kawasaki's Billy Mackenzie and Raceline Pirelli Suzuki's Lawson Bopping neck and neck for first, but Mackenzie went down as soon as he got the lead, allowing Bopping to take the win, with Jay Marmont right on his tail at the chequered flag, followed by his CDR Rockstar Yamaha team mate, Jake Moss, in third.
In the second final, Mackenzie took the holeshot and shot out to an early lead. Hometown rider, Team Motul Pirelli Suzuki's Dan McCoy, was second and Marmont third until the CDR rider passed McCoy and went after Mackenzie. He eventually made the pass and checked out to take the win. Mackenzie slipped on the final corner of the final lap, giving McCoy second and Moss third.
In the third Open class final, Jay Marmont capped off an impressive weekend by taking the holeshot and never looking back, recording an easy win that resulted in the Wollongong rider's first round win of the championship. Bopping was second in the final race and second overall, with first round winner, JDR Motorex KTM's Tye Simmonds, third overall. Unfortunately Jake Moss had a bad crash on the last lap of the last race and was taken to hospital. Moss was later diagnosed with broken ribs, a punctured lung and mild concussion, but is expected to recover well.
"It was so good to go out there today and race with all of the emotions I had coming into the round," Marmont said with reference to the birth of his son two days earlier.
"It feels great to finally get a win and I'm feeling really positive about the rest of the championship. Huge thanks to the CDR Yamaha team for all their hard work. It was tough seeing Jake go down on the final lap though and I hope he is alright and back out there racing next weekend."
There were a few big crashes in the Under 19s and Michelin Development Series finals. Joel Dinsdale took out the Michelin juniors, while Errol Willis dominated from start to finish to comfortably win the Under 19s.
Round four of Super X, the Australasian Supercross Championship will take place at Maitland Oval on Saturday, November 12.
