Jay Marmont wins 2011 Monster Energy Super X
The format for the Lites final was a traditional 15 lap moto, which meant that early mistakes could be corrected, and overtaking moves planned in the longer format. Such was the case for Moss, who entered the final round 22 points ahead of his closest competitor, Serco Yamaha's Luke Styke. Barring a major mistake from Moss, the lead was unbeatable, so Moss could afford to take it easy.
In the race, Carlton Dry Thor Honda's American import, Gavin Faith, took the holeshot, just ahead of Moss and held a lead over the KTM rider for most of the race. With time and laps in hand, Moss kept gaining on Faith and eventually overtook him on the penultimate lap to take the win. Faith held on for second and Kirk Gibbs (Serco Yamaha) was third. With Styke well behind in fifth, Moss comfortably took the overall championship win, the final margin being 29 points. For Moss, the result was especially sweet after losing the 2010 Super X Lites title in controversial circumstances to P.J. Larsen.
"Today was a great day, because coming in with a 22-point lead my nerves were pretty settled," Moss said.
"I sat in second for most of the race before going into the lead and it means so much to me to wrap up the championship with a win. I want to give a big thanks to the JDR team.
"They took the championship away from me last year, but I signed with them at the start of this year and have now managed to win the motocross and supercross. We are one big happy family and we have got the number one plate so now let's go to America and do it over there," Moss added, referring to his decision to race for JDR in the AMA Supercross and Motocross championships in 2012.
While the championship in the Lites class was in little doubt, the Open class was definitely still open, with CDR Rockstar Energy Yamaha's Jay Marmont holding a slim five point lead over JDR Motorex KTM's Tye Simmonds, with Motul Pirelli Suzuki's Daniel McCoy a further three points back. Raceline Pirelli Suzuki's Lawson Bopping and Monster Energy Kawasaki's Billy Mackenzie were also mathematical chances of taking the Open championship.
With the chance of his first Super X championship on the line, Marmont was determined from the outset, turning on massive pace through the heat races and looking dominant every time he entered the track. That form translated smoothly into the 20 lap final as Marmont took the holeshot and checked out for a comfortable win. In the battle for the remaining podium places, Mackenzie held second place for the race's early stages, but a minor mistake allowed Simmonds to make a pass. Simmonds couldn't match the pace of Marmont, but finished a comfortable second in the race, ahead of Hart & Huntington / Insure My Ride's Chris Blose.
The American guest rider overtook Mackenzie for the final podium spot, whom he also had a stoush with after a collision in the 'man vs man' race earlier in the night. Behind them, Carlton Dry Thor Honda's Todd Waters finished fifth, with McCoy sixth. Marmont's race win ensured the championship vistory, the Yamaha rider adding the 2011 Super X Open championship to his four MX Nationals outdoor titles. Simmonds finished the championship in second, eight points behind Marmont, with third going to McCoy. Mackenzie and Bopping rounded out the top five.
"I am over the moon!" Marmont said after clinching his first Super X championship.
"I have had nervous jitters all week and worrying that something would go wrong with the bike or I would crash, so I am so glad to have ridden well and finish with a win. I really want to congratulate Tye [Simmonds] and Dan [McCoy] who both rode great all series. A huge thanks you to my team for all their hard work and of course my family for all of their support," Marmont added.
The round and championship victory was a huge effort by Marmont and the Craig Dack Racing team, considering that after the opening round, Marmont sat in eighth place and over ten points behind the leader. After that disappointment, the ever determined 28-year-old set about clawing back the points and barnstormed home in the final four rounds with 3-1-2-1 results to finish the year in style.
In the Under 19s final, Errol Willis (Raceline Pirelli Suzuki) continued the double championship trend by winning his second Under 19's title for the year, with Thor Honda Smart's Geran Stapleton second and Corey Lucas (Hart & Huntington, ONE Industries) third overall.
