Indian confirms production of FTR 1200
The production model follows Indian’s successful return to US flat track racing with the ‘FTR 750’ in 2017, and has been rumoured ever since Indian unveiled the ‘FTR1200 Custom’ concept at last November’s EICMA show in Milan.
“When we unveiled the FTR1200 Custom, we said we’d listen to feedback from riders around the world,” said Steve Menneto, President, Indian Motorcycle. “Riders definitely have spoken and the response has been overwhelming. We’re proud and excited to announce that we will be putting the FTR 1200 into production.”

However, while Indian has confirmed a roadgoing FTR 1200 will be built, they’ve so far added precious little information beyond that.
Aesthetic inspiration “from Indian’s incredible pedigree and success in flat track racing” will be applied to the roadgoing FTR 1200, which suggests elements from the concept, like the high-mount exhaust and bobbed guards, will remain, but Indian says the road bike will have a look and style all its own.
“We wanted to make sure that the FTR 1200 wasn’t merely a regurgitation of the FTR1200 Custom, but something uniquely ‘street,’ albeit flat track inspired,” said Indian Motorcycle Senior Designer Rich Christoph

The Scout’s 1133cc v-twin engine is expected to be the FTR 1200’s powerplant, which in the Custom concept was claimed to produce more than 75kW. And while some form of Scout-based engine is still highly likely, Indian have stated that the upcoming model will feature a “new” v-twin without revealing its capacity or power output.
In terms of other componentry, a trellis frame has been confirmed. The concept’s Ohlins suspension and Brembo brakes are possibilities to make the production version (possibly as a premium special edition), but don’t expect the two-piece carbon fibre body, severely bobbed tail and Roland Sands Design ‘Traction’ race wheels to make the transition. The production version of the FTR 1200 will be officially unveiled later this year, where full specs and pricing will also be announced.
