Honda announce CB 650F and CBR 650F
Described by Honda as being all new from the wheels up, the naked CB 650F and faired CBR 650F feature a brand new inline four cylinder engine, steel diamond frame and ABS braking, amongst other features.
Sharing the same frame, engine and basic platform, the CB 650F and CBR 650F are the product of a younger group of Honda designers and engineers. The CB is described as having streetfighter styling elements, while the CBR is more in the traditional sportsbike mould. Both feature sharp, angular lines for a modern appearance, while the exhaust pipe layout on the CB 650F naked has echoes of the classic CB 400F Super Sport from the 1970s.
With a low centre of gravity, upright seating position and wide handlebars, the CB 650F is commuter friendly, with these same features likely to see it appeal to first time and returning riders.
The sports-oriented CBR 650F features a full fairing in the style of other CBR sportsbikes, and features a slim feel and high-set handlebars. Claimed to give excellent control and confidence, the bar layout and seat position on the CBR 650F are designed more for highways and sweeping b-roads, but Honda say the 650F is just as capable on busy urban streets.
LAMS suitability for both these models has yet to be confirmed, but given their capacity, and indications from Honda's press release, it's highly likely both will be learner-legal.
At the heart of both new models is a brand-new DOHC, 649cc liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine. Sitting forward in the frame for optimal weight distribution, the new inline four was developed to deliver high torque through the low-to-mid rpm range and strong acceleration from a standing start.
PGM fuel injection is fed through a down-flow airbox and operates with information from four separate throttle body sensors on 32mm throttle bores for crisp throttle response.
Both 650s feature a high-quality steel diamond frame that has been specifically tuned to deliver the desired handling characteristics and appropriate level of rider feedback. The swingarm pivot plate is forged then welded together. The swingarm itself is gravity die-cast aluminium, with an adjustable 7-stage spring preload monoshock, in a curved shape designed to ride over the low-seat muffler, which has been designed and placed to suit the new models' low centre of gravity.
Front suspension consists of 41mm telescopic forks which, like the rear monoshock, have been developed to provide supple, neutral control in all conditions. Compared to the CB 650F, the CBR 650F features a firmer spring rate to match its sports-oriented focus.
Common to both models are twin 320mm wave front brake discs and single 240mm rear disc, with 2-spot Nissin calipers up front and single-spot rear, complemented by ABS as standard fitment.
Both the CB 650F and CBR 650F are set for local release in the second quarter of 2014, with Australian-available colour schemes for the CB 650F comprising HRC-inspired Tricolour (Red/White/Blue) and Candy Tahitian Blue, while the CBR650F will be available in Pearl Metalloid White and Sword Silver Metallic.
Pricing, full specs and further information on these exciting new releases are expected in early 2014.
