Excelsior outfit tops bike sales at NZ auction
Top seller amongst the bikes was a rare American classic in the form of a 1915 Excelsior 'Big X' v-twin. While these motorcycles are desirable in their own right, what made this one more eye-catching was its very good overall condition, and the addition of a period authentic sidecar. The well-made timber-bodied sidecar was complete with folding canvas top, button seat upholstery and wicker carry basket slung across the back of the frame.
The example auctioned is believed to be one of only three that were brought into New Zealand for 1915. It originally belonged to Frank and Harry Limerick, pioneering cycle agents based in Waipawa on New Zealand's North Island. With 1,000ccs of power and a high compression ratio, the big Henderson (which was a solo back then), was reportedly hard to sell, but eventually found an enthusiastic owner in Cliff Wyman, who was more than happy with the Big X. He allegedly got the machine over the 100mph mark at the Otane racecourse near Waipawa - riding two up, no less!
In the early 1950s, Rex Scarrott purchased the Excelsior off Wyman, saving it from being broken up to power a boat. Scarrott restored and used the machine regularly, ensuring it was preserved as a classic piece of American iron. The current owner and vendor continued to preserve and respect the machine.
With only four owners from new and one of only three New Zealand-delivered examples, this historic piece of motorcycle engineering was expected to be one of the top sellers ahead of the auction and didn't disappoint, selling for NZ$70,150 (incl. buyer's premium).
Clearance rate from this auction (across cars and bikes) was an impressive 94 percent. Entries are now invited for Webb's next specialty car and motorcycle auction, which is scheduled for October. For further details, ph: 0011 64 9 524 6804, or go to www.webbs.co.nz
