Christini AWD motorcycles coming soon
Christini Australia have had a few demo models on test at local tracks, but will use the Melbourne Expo to launch its AWD 250, 300 and 450 machines, in addition to performance packs and frame kits for a selection of brands.
Based in Philadeplhia, USA Christini Technologies started out manufacturing AWD mountain bikes, before development on an AWD motorbike started in 2002. The first customer model of the Christini AWD dirt bike sold in 2007, with the system later adopted by the US Military and US Border Patrol, with the first worldwide sales push started in 2011.
The patented mechanical system in the Christini AWD motorcycle delivers power from the transmission through a series of chains and shafts. It works in a similar manner to four-wheel AWD vehicles, whereby the system powering the front wheel is driven at a slightly lower rate - approximately 80% - than the rear wheel.
In optimum traction conditions, the rear wheel will actually drive faster than the front AWD system, with one-way clutches in the front hub allowing the front wheel to freewheel. When traction is lost, the AWD activates, transferring power to the front wheel until traction is re-established. Cornering and straight-line stability are claimed to be dramatically improved, and the AWD system relieves rider fatigue, allowing faster riding, for longer.
Jeff Gleeson from Christini Australia said initial interest in the bike was promising.
"We've been fielding plenty of enquiries from people interested about the bikes and just how much difference the All-Wheel-Drive system makes to riding," said Gleeson.
"The difference between an off-road bike with drive from both wheels and the normal single wheel drive is night and day - we think the local market will love it.
"The Australian Motorcycle Expo will be our first big showing and it's encouraging to know that many visitors are making the trip to check out the bikes in the flesh," Gleeson concluded.
The Christini 250 and 300 models feature Gas Gas 2-stroke engines, while the 450 features a 4-stroke single similar in spec and size to a Honda CRF single. A twin spar aluminium frame, Paoli front forks and CSR rear monoshock, along with 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels are common to all versions. The 2-strokes feature a 6 speed transmission, with the 450 4-stroke runnign a 5-speed 'box.
Quoted weight for the 450 is 125kg dry, with the 250 and 300 listed as only 108kg, so the AWD system doesn't add much extra weight over a comparable 2WD dirt bike.
The lightweight AWD system has been tested in tough conditions and has a track record of reliability in World Endurance competition, Endurocross and the Red Bull Last Man Standing, amongst others. A limited number of test units have already been tearing up the dirt at local tracks.
Christini Australia is just one of the many distributors and manufacturers confirmed for next week's event at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre - from the 23rd to the 25th of November. Further details, entry times and ticket price info can be found at www.motorcycleshow.com.au
