CDR/Rockstar Yamaha - Rd 2
While not exactly where they would like to be in the 2010 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals, CDR Rockstar Yamaha still came away from round 2 of the championship satisfied with their performance. This race format of four short eight lap motos run back-to-back was always going to be tough as it allowed little room for error, especially in the starts. Both Jay Marmont and Cheyne Boyd acknowledged this after the race.
"I just couldn't get out of the gate in the first moto", Boyd said.
"But the last three races were a bit better. I feel like I am riding the bike quite well and I have been training hard, so a return to good results can't be far away."
By the team's own high standards, the first moto in particular was a poor one, with Jay and Cheyne finishing in the bottom half of the top ten, but both clicked in the final two motos to be at the head of the pack from the start.
"It was a struggle getting out of the gate in the first couple of races and I really had to fight my way through," Marmont said.
"But once I got my starts better, I was able to win race three and run inside the top three in the final moto."
Marmont also acknowledged that the sprint-style format at Canberra better suited some of the younger riders in the field who ride and train this way, rather than over the more traditional 20 minute moto format.
With this in mind, Marmont was pleased to make up for a poor start (fifth) in moto 2 and fight his way up to third by the finish. Marmont's performance in the third moto was just as impressive. Both Jay and Cheyne found their groove to be second and third behind Honda privateer, Dean Ferris, out of the gate, with Jay pouncing near the end to take his sole moto victory of the round. In the same race, Cheyne had his own battle with this year's emerging stars, Todd Waters and Tye Simmonds.
In the final moto, it was Cheyne's turn, narrowly missing the holeshot behind Simmonds. From there, the CDR duo were fighting for the final podium place behind Waters and Simmonds. Jay passed Cheyne for third, while Cheyne was pipped by KTM's Andrew McFarlane for fourth.
Jay's second overall for the round moved him up to second in the championship behind Waters, keeping hopes of a championship "three-peat" alive.
Team principal, Craig Dack, acknowledged the improvement made by both riders, and is looking forward to the upcoming rounds.
"It was an up and down day for the team, but everyone fought on to make it a respectable finish. I feel that both riders are on the cusp of returning to their best and I can see the determination building up in them," Dack said.
