BMW previews 2021 R 1250 RT
BMW Motorrad has revealed an updated R 1250 RT, which is due to reach Australian dealerships before the middle of 2021.

Most of the available rider aids and tech equipment will be standard on Australian-delivered MY21 R 1250 RTs, including Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Cruise Control and BMW’s Full Integral ABS Pro, with some of that tech enhanced compared to the existing model, too.
The fairing has been redesigned in terms of appearance, rider vision and aerodynamic efficiency and the headlight package is now all LED with a turning function to light the way through corners.

There’s also a new multifunctional instrument display on a 10.25-inch colour TFT display with enhanced functionality, including the ability to show a navigation map within the instrument display, which BMW are claiming as a world-first in the motorcycle arena.

"We have given the R 1250 RT a new look, a comprehensive increase in standard equipment and numerous technical upgrades to achieve a whole new riding experience," said BMW Motorrad’s RT Project Manager Harald Spagl.
"As a dynamic tourer with the incomparable BMW ShiftCam engine, it also has the perfect power unit with impressive power across the entire speed range."

Boxer engine with ShiftCam
The R 1250 RT’s boxer twin still produces 100kW (136hp) at 7,750 rpm and 143Nm at 6,250 rpm, with a knock sensor system incorporated for what BMW Motorrad says is optimised travel suitability.
The 1,254cc engine also incorporates BMW’s ShiftCam Technology: a variable valve timing system that adjusts valve timing and stroke on the intake side to suit various riding and engine load conditions.
With powerful response across the rpm range, the ShiftCam also improves fuel consumption, lowers emission levels and offers what BMW says is superior running smoothness with a high level of refinement.

DTC, DCC, Riding Modes Pro and ABS upgrade
The standard-fitment Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) adds a new "Eco" riding mode to help the rider achieve the best possible fuel efficiency.
Dynamic Cruise Control (DTC) and Active Cruise Control (ACC) will both be standard on Australian models, with the former allowing a preselected speed to be maintained, even when riding downhill, while the latter uses radar sensor technology to modulate speed and distance from the vehicle in front.

All Australian-delivered R 1250 RT models will also come with Riding Modes Pro, which allowing the engine performance, braking, DTC and other tech settings to be adjusted to an even higher level of individual preference.
Riding Modes Pro adds engine drag torque control (MSR) that counteracts unstable riding conditions that can occur during downshifting due to excessive brake slip at the rear wheel.
Full Integral ABS Pro takes the existing qualities of BMW Motorrad’s ABS Pro system and adds banking angle optimisation and dynamic brake force distribution, delivering what BMW says is the ideal braking system for the R 1250 RT.

New fairing design and ‘turning’ headlight
An update of the R 1250 RT fairing for 2021 brings not only a refreshed look, but also improved efficiency, thanks to the integration of additional aerodynamic advancements.
The new design fully encloses the headlights, while a reduction in the height of the fairing’s upper section (and an increase in windscreen size) removes blind spots for a wider field of vision.
The headlight is new, too, and adds an "Adaptive Turning Light" and dipped beam to the standard full LED headlight, turning the light beam into the bend according to the bike’s banking position.
This, BMW Motorrad says, ensures the bend is almost fully illuminated to provide greater visibility of the road and surroundings when cornering.

New TFT colour dash with map display
Rider comfort and convenience tech on the new R 1250 RT starts with the addition of map navigation to the 10.25-inch TFT instrument display - a first for motorcycles.
Also new is a 'Comfort telephony with extended smartphone connection' feature that secures your smartphone in a storage compartment that’s water resistant and ventilated by an electric fan. An integral USB connection allows your phone to be charging while on the move.
Finally, the ‘Audio System 2.0’ offers what BMW says is an even more intense sound experience than its predecessor, elevating the entertainment offering for both short and long journeys.
Due for Australian release in Q2, 2021, the updated BMW R 1250 RT will be available in the familiar grades of RT, Elegance, Sport and Option 719. Full specifications and pricing to be announced ahead of local delivery.
