Bike of the Month. Jan 2008
Take me back to the golden age of motorcycling, when makes such as Sunbeam, Triumph, Excelsior, Royal Enfield, Norton and BSA, to name a few, were king.
The Thirties, Forties and Fifties were a time when the Brits lead the world with a host of classic motorcycles. Among these was the Vincent - a brand recognised for its innovation, craftsmanship, reliability and power. The Vincent range was never extensive - preferring to name bikes as a "series", which enabled them a longer life than merely designating them by year. Best known models are, of course, the Black Shadow, with the first being a retuned version of the Series B Rapide, which superseded the pre-war Series A Rapide in 1946. The Vincent reached its zenith in the 1949-50 period with the introduction of the new C Series. There were three 1000cc models - the racing Rapide, the "Black Lightning", the "Black Shadow" (the sports Rapide) and the "Rapide". All of these models are relatively rare and bike enthusiasts are fortunate that EuroBrit Motorbikes of Greensborough, Victoria are dedicated enthusiasts that stock, service and maintain a range of spare parts for Vincent and other classic British and European brands.
While you will also find a Black Shadow at EuroBrit, this month they have this fantastic 1949 Series C Vincent Rapide 1000cc available. This bike was originally consigned to Elder-Smith, who were the dealers at the time in Melbourne, and has matching engine and frame numbers, with crankcase mating numbers M14. It was restored some years ago by a well known Vincent engineer, but hasn't done a lot of miles since. It starts easily and behaves well on the road. It is pretty much in standard form, with the exception of Black Shadow spec monobloc carbies and brake drumsand a multiplate clutch. This model Rapide was renowned for being fast, rugged and reliable. Vincent's big V twins were the ultimate high performance roadsters of their day. The C Series saw Girdraulic forks replacing the previous Brampton girders and a damper for the rear suspension. Its 1000cc V-twin was capable of exceeding 110 mph - an incredible speed at the time. It has a 4-speed gearbox with positive stop foot control and three and a half gallon fuel tank. This Vincent is a magnificent example and one that will bring someone much joy.
Asking price is $55,000. For further details, give Al a call at EuroBrit on (03) 9432 6886.
