Bike of the month - Honda CBR954 Superbike. Sept 06
When he raced for Honda, Jay had two bikes: a production superbike raced in ARRC; and a slightly 'wilder' version for Formula Xtreme duty. The bike pictured here is the Formula Xtreme version and boasts rear wheel horsepower figures in the high 160's (on average about 30 - 35 more than stock). This was achieved through lots of modifications under the watchful eye of his head mechanic, Graeme McMillan.
As with all superbikes, the engine has had some modification. The bike has been converted to ram air - with no air filter - so it can take big breaths down the long straights at Australia's race circuits. The head was sent all the way to Japan's Moriwaki Engineering to have it ported and polished. Moriwaki also supplied the cams that reside in the engine. The engine cases have been decked to raise the compression ratio much higher than standard and, of course, the gearbox has been undercut.
The chassis has seen just as many modifications. Front forks have been re-sprung and re-valved using Race Tech components. The rear shock has been replaced by a Penski rear shock along with a modification to the suspension link. The rear has also been raised quiet considerably - 5mm at the suspension components - which is equal to around 25mm at the seat. These modifications make the bike turn extremely well. The 954's in standard trim handle well and have a reputation of becoming extremely lively once you throw a set of slicks on them. So, with the modifications mentioned above, the bike had a tendency to head shake. This was solved by fitting a fully adjustable Ohlins steering dampener, which stops the bike from behaving like a rodeo bull!
In standard form, the 954's brakes are up there with the best thanks to massive rotors Honda fitted as standard. These were good enough for race use, the only modifications needed being braided brake line, race compound brake pads and, of course, higher grade brake fluid. All the standard brackets, foot pegs, and rear sets have been replaced by handcrafted aluminum items.
Current owner of this bike and also the production superbike version, Robert Paul, has purchased a business in Sydney's West. Due to concentrating his time on the new business, this awesome bike and the parts from the sister bike have been put up for sale. So if you are interested in purchasing a full spec, ready-to-race superbike, or just some parts for your own track bike, give Rob or Steph a call at their newly acquired business - Eastern Creek Motorcycle Wreckers.
Rob & Steph purchased the business from Steve Shaw who, with his partner Peter Gurney, set ECMW up in 2000 to wreck late model sportsbikes only (from 1996 onwards). With his love for racing and track days, Robert sees Eastern Creek Motorcycle Wreckers as his way of combining his working life with his pastime. Rob and Steph have set about changing a few things, but predominately want to keep the business wrecking late model sportsbikes. There are a few extra developments for the business in the future, but there will be more on them when they develop. While Steph work in sales alongside Donny (a much avowed Suzuki supporter!), Robert's role is in purchasing, and he spends a lot of time chasing more stock. The business also deals in the sale and fitment of new Michelin and Bridgestone tyres, RK and DID chains and numerous aftermarket exhausts, Motul oils and EBC brake pads.
