Bay to Birdwood Adelaide's Classic Cavalcade
This year's event will be filled with fun and family entertainment, as well as attracting 1750 classic vehicles - including a strong contingent of motorcycles. This year's Bay to Birdwood Classic will be held on Sunday, 25 September, 2011.
Whether you line the route or join the thousands for the post-event celebrations at the National Motor Museum, the Classic is an event not to be missed!
The Classic commences at Adelaide Shores, West Beach, with vehicles travelling a 70km route through metropolitan Adelaide, culminating at the National Motor Museum Birdwood, which houses the most extensive collection of historic motoring vehicles in Australia. It takes approximately two hours for the journey - and two hours for the non-stop classic parade to travel past any one vantage point along the route. To find out where you can view the event, click on the route map at www.baytobirdwood.com.au and make sure you get to your selected vantage point early!
There will be something for everyone to enjoy as the cars pull up at their destination in the Adelaide Hills. Admire the field of classic vehicles and enjoy the full entertainment program, including for 2011 Adelaide's own award winning Elvis impersonator, Mark Anthony, performing three sets of Elvis through the decades. Enjoy the Adelaide Hills Regional Food and Wine fare with tastings, celebrity demonstrations and plates/platters/picnic baskets for sale (pre-order by telephone/facsimile 8357 5445). There will also be a range of other community food outlets, Fashions in The Field (dress in a bygone era and you could be one of the prize winners), dancing displays, public awards (cast a vote for your favourite vehicle), Kiddies' Korner (supervised activities for 5-12 year olds), and of course, visitors can enjoy all that the Motor Museum and the village of Birdwood have to offer.
Spectators are invited to meet the participants at the start of the event; access and parking information is available at the website. First arrivals begin around 6am and there is a steady stream of Classic traffic until about 8:30am, when the last of the vehicles take to Barratt Reserve ahead of the 9am start. This is a great opportunity to walk amongst the vehicles and talk with their owners, many of whom dress according to the era of their vehicle. Enjoy breakfast (provided by local service clubs), jazz and entertainment, and wave off the entrants as they commence their day's journey.
Rejoin the field mid-morning at the National Motor Museum Birdwood for a memorable day out in the Adelaide Hills. The event organisers recommend that spectators travelling to Birdwood avoid the traffic and use the SE Freeway, taking the Hahndorf turn off and driving across the Onkaparinga Valley to Birdwood.
The Bay to Birdwood Classic takes place biennially on the last Sunday in September, alternating with The Bay to Birdwood Run. The Classic has been growing in popularity since its inception over a decade ago, with the first event was held in 1997. As well as being built between 1956 and 1977, eligible vehicles must conform as closely as possible to the manufacturers' specifications, be in a presentable condition and be roadworthy.
