2017 KTM 390 Duke arrives

Styling is clearly inspired by the 1290 Super Duke R, with the insect-like split headlight and sharper side plastics that make the new 390 Duke look larger and more aggressive than its predecessor.

 

Described by KTM as "a dynamic wolf in LAMS clothing" and "sportier and more modern than ever," the MY17 390 Duke is powered by a 373.2cc single-cylinder engine which is largely unchanged (despite the ride-by-wire throttle, a first in this class) and outputs 32kW and 37Nm - both of which now arrive lower in the rev range.

 

A slipper clutch makes shifting through the six-speed gearbox smoother and safer, while the close-ratio gearing, in combination with the engine management system, claims to improve performance and reduce fuel consumption.

 

The frame is a lightweight steel trellis type, matched to a bolt-on subframe for the first time, and a die-cast alloy swingarm. This new chassis configuration is expected to translate across to the faired RC390 sports bike, too.

 

Revised suspension now consists of a WP 43mm USD front fork with 142mm travel, and a WP monoshock rear with 150mm travel.

 

Braking consists of a larger (+20mm) 320mm single front disc and 230mm rear, with 2-channel Bosch ABS that's been recalibrated for 2017 and can be switched off the rear wheel (Supermoto mode) or disengaged entirely.

 

The TFT screen, a first in this class, features a multicolour display that also automatically adjusts for ambient light. The TFT also "warns" the rider against things like over-revving a cold engine by changing the display's colours.

 

The My Ride option allows for a smartphone to be controlled by the left-hand switchgear that also operates the TFT menu.

A 13.4-litre fuel capacity (up by 2.4 litres), 149kg dry weight (up 10kg from the outgoing model) and 830mm seat height (up by 30mm) are other features.
