2013 Scrapheap Adventure ride another success
Scrapheap Adventure Ride founder and organiser Pery Gilsenan provided the following wrap of this year's event, which was run to support people with Down Syndrome and raise funds for Down Syndrome NSW and Down Syndrome Australia.
By now the dust has well and truly settled after another great Scrapheap Adventure Ride, our fourth. This year's event was a great success with over $60,000 raised to support people with Down Syndrome through Down Syndrome NSW and Down Syndrome Australia.
After a gathering of such a great bunch of people from all over the country, I'm sure the memories, laughs and excitement will continue on forever.
Some of the aches and pains of this adventure are becoming distant memories too. For those who didn't quite make it to Comeroo, we thank you for your efforts and enthusiasm and hope your recoveries are complete. We hope to see you again at a future Scrapheap Adventure.
I would like to thank everyone who came along, as well as all of the big-hearted supporters who have consistently been behind this great event. The generosity is humbling.
We will be updating the website and Facebook pages, so keep checking in regularly. There is a DVD on this year's event currently in production, as well as some great photos in the various galleries.
Recapping the awards:
Best Scrapheap Bike - Ross Worgan, who rode a Suzuki 60cc two stroke step through and covered 1600 kilometres to get to and from Inverell, including a 700k's one day sprint at 55kph average speed.
Best Sidecar - Mick O'Brien for his CT125 Sidecar - this was a work of art and a credit to Mick's ingenuity to get it to Comeroo along with the rest of Team Inverell.
Best 'Engineered' Scrapper - Joe Thompson for the Rebuilt K100 Scare Chair which came to grief on the way home from Scrapheap 2012. Joe has been to every Scrapheap and this was an amazing transformation to get it back together for this year.
Most Raised (Teams) - Team Inverell with 14 members on various old ag bikes and the like. These amazing men on their smoking machines raised close to $10,000. A huge effort and a huge dust cloud.
Most Raised (Individual) - Cameron Jackson; with the passion and skill to shake down his mates and work colleagues (something the mafia would be proud of!). Cameron raised over $5300.
Hard Luck Award - Our wonderful musician Gleny Rae, who went over the bars on the final leg into Comeroo aboard her CB250 road bike. Despite hitting some soft sand and cartwheeling, she got straight back on and then went on to play on the Saturday night. Who can forget the arrival of the old Toyota Troopy running on chip oil. Check out Gleny's web site and buy some of her great music at http://www.glenyrae.com/.
We have a lot of thank yous and too many to list here. I would like to special mention of Martyn Wyllie of Pilot Air Compressors, Steve Smith of Adventure Moto, Clubby from TrailZone Magazine, Greg Yager of Old Bulls Trail Riders for leading the ride from Bathurst to Comeroo, Brad Hare from Hare and Forbes Machinery House and Michael McDowell from The Sign and Badge Centre - www.indentify.com.au/.
I would also like to thank my wife Jane, as well as Grace and Molly who were very patient with all the phone calls, meetings and the time taken from the family organising this event.
For the record the mighty XR460/4 made it again this year - confounding most critics.
So where and when is the next Scrapheap Adventure Ride??? At this stage we haven't finalised a date of location form the next Scrapheap, but will send out an announcement once the details have been confirmed.
A big thank you once again!!!
