2012 Vic Road Racing Championship - Round 1
Under new management this year in the form of International Entertainment Group (IEG), the three round VRRC series is set to be one of the best state-level championships ever, based on the feedback from riders and spectators on the opening round.
In the superbike class, Ben Nicolson, also known as "Mr.Spectacular", kicked off his campaign for a first Victorian road racing championship in fine style, winning all three races on board his Kawasaki ZX-10R. The 24-year-old was in a class of his own all weekend, with the only real threat coming from Tasmanian rider Brett Simmonds (Honda CBR 1000RR), who finished second overall, with Ben Hooke rounding out the top three.
"The weekend was pretty good," an enthusiastic Nicolson said afterward. "We qualified on pole and won all three races, so I can't complain at all!"
Nicolson leads the championship on 75 points, 11 clear of Simmonds, who sits on 64, and Hooke on 60. Just to add a few more trophies for the cabinet, Nicolson also smashed the field in the supermoto class, winning all three races aboard his Kawasaki KXF 450.
Mirroring Nicolson's dominance in the superbike class, Ryan Taylor made the supersport class his own at Broadford. With pole position and three race wins, Taylor was untouchable in the 600 class all weekend. Beating his own lap record in race three with a time of 58.235 was the icing on the cake for the Yamaha YZF R6 rider. On the podium, Taylor was joined by two NSW riders: Michael Blair picking up second; and Matthew Fyffe in third.
"It's been a very good weekend," Taylor said. "I would have liked to get the supersport lap record on the first day, but it came in the last race on the second day. I now look forward to carrying this momentum into the next round of the ASBK in Darwin where I'm hoping for a top 5 result," he added.
Ahead of rounds two and three of the VRRC, Taylor has sent a clear message to his rivals - catch me if you can! Taylor was also victorious in the Period 6 historic class.
Other class winners for the weekend included Luke Burgess (Australian/Victorian 250 Production), Zac Zanesco (125GP), Olly Simpson (150cc Juniors), Max Croker (80cc Juniors), Jacob Street (70cc Juniors), and Craig Domaschenz (Superthunder).
July 7 - 8 will see round two of the Motul Victorian Road Racing Championship presented by IEG return to Broadford, with the finale at Phillip Island on October 6 - 7.
