1981 BMW R100 'Outback'
The R100 (not including the RT, S, RS variants) was built between 1980-84 and is powered by a twin cylinder overhead cam engine. Displacing 980cc it produces 70hp at 7,250rpm, for a claimed top speed (at date of release) of 115 mph. The standing quarter mile was accomplished in just under 13 seconds. It uses telescopic fork front suspension and a rear swingarm. 1981 was the first year that new BMW bikes were equipped with electronic ignition, nickel sill barrels, a larger oil sump, Brembo front brakes and many other innovations. With the variants gaining popularity, the stock R100s were losing market share, and it's this that lead to the development of the Outback. Only offered in Australia in the early to mid 1980s as a way to boost appeal of the stock R100, the main distinguishing features of the Outback from other R Series (the RT, RS, LT, S, etc variants) are wire wheels and a R 100 'S' fairing. Our feature bike has an RT fairing instead, as well as pannier bags, a tow bar bracket and is in beautiful condition at a steal of a price - only $6,250.
If touring is your passion, this is an ideal bike. It is equipped with dual lockable storage cases, pillion seat and has a large protective windscreen on the fairing and a 5 speed transmission. This is a great touring bike and one that demands a closer look.
