Race to Dakar - Now on DVD
The series, which recently screened on ABC TV, details Charley's attempt at the rally - one of the most dramatic endurance events known to man that, until now, has been shrouded in an air of mystery. A two disc DVD of the "Race to Dakar" seven episode TV series is now available through EMI Music.
Revving up his BMW F650 motorbike alongside the 766 other professional and amateur competitors (252 bikes, 174 cars, 69 trucks), Charley Boorman waited anxiously on the starting line of the 28th Annual Dakar Rally on a cold New Year's morning in Lisbon. A full 7,000 miles (11,200 km) separated Charley from the finishing line in Dakar on the West African coast. The calmness in Lisbon belied the perils facing him ahead, the unforgiving terrain of North Africa and the Sahara desert.
The DVD features the entire TV series, from the pre-trip preparation and race training, through to the highs and lows of Charley's Dakar trip. It contains a number of extras including unseen and extended footage, details on the building of the BMW F650 Dakar machine, photo gallery, exclusive post-trip interview and much more.
To ensure the entirety of the gruelling race is conveyed in the TV series, the action footage was captured by placing front and rear-facing helmet cameras on Charley and each of the team. There was also a rider travelling alongside filming footage, plus a dedicated cameraman flying between stages to present and record the colour and the behind-the-scenes drama of the adventure in full.
