Updated MotoGP 2014 rider lineup
At time of publication, only Iodaracing were still to confirm their rider lineup and Open class engine/frame package. Aprilia is rumoured to be the choice of engine, with World Superbike rider Leon Camier allegedly on the shortlist to join Danilo Petrucci in the team.
With the dropping of the Claiming Rule Team (CRT) sub-series, the non-factory and non-satellite riders will be on (hopefully) more competitive machinery in the rebranded 'Open' class next year.
The Open class comprises most of the former CRT teams, and outwardly, there appears little difference from what was run this year and by whom. But, there are some changes in this "controlled" prototype class, with NGM Mobile Forward Racing running a customer-spec Yamaha engine, while the new RCV1000R Honda V4 engine and frame package has been chosen by the Power Electronics Aspar, GO&FUN Gresini and Cardion AB Motoracing teams.
Gresini and Pramac Racing will have a foot in both camps in 2014, running one entry as a satellite and one Open class bike next season, similar to what both squads did with their mixed satellite/CRT teams this year.
The Open class will have more concessions in terms of the amount of engines used per season (12, versus 5 for the factory teams), and will also be required to use a control ECU, rather than the bespoke electronics run by each factory team. Factory entries will also have their bikes' fuel capacity reduced by four-litres: 20 litres against 24-litres for the Open class bikes.
