In the end, Toseland clinched the title from Haga by a mere two points.
Race 1 of the final round at Magny Cours almost ended Toseland's title aspirations at the first corner, when he was forced off the track after colliding with Lorenzo Lanzi (Xerox Ducati).
From the back of the pack, Toseland then fought his way up to finish seventh. Haga won the first race from Troy Bayliss (Xerox Ducati), which meant that the title would go right down to the final race of the season.
In a far less frantic race 2, Haga again surged to the front, with Max Biaggi (Alstare Suzuki) close behind. Toseland briefly battled with Bayliss, before deciding to let the Aussie go and concentrate on winning the championship. Toseland's sixth place finish in race 2 was enough to secure the Briton his second World Superbike Championship.
Aussies, Bayliss and Troy Corser (Yamaha Italia) finished fourth & fifth in the title respectively.
