Six Hour winning Triumph recreated for Broadford Bike Bonanza
The original Triumph, entered by famous Parramatta dealer Barry Ryan and ridden to victory by Len Atlee and the late Bryan Hindle, clocked up 312 laps (607.15 km) of Amaroo Park, the former circuit on the outskirts of Sydney, on its way to victory.
The Atlee/Hindle Triumph was one of three T120 650cc Bonnevilles in the race. The others were ridden by Jack Ahearn/Graeme Besson and John Vile/Tasman O'Hara. The Ahearn/Besson machine finished third on 304 laps, separated from the winner by Craig Brown's Honda CB750.
The original, race-winning Bonneville has long since disappeared, but with the Six Hour theme (one of two) for this year's Bonanza, Triumph's Cliff Stovall has built an authentic replica for Peter Stevens Imports boss, Steve Chiodo.
While the original bike may be gone, there will be an 'original' connection with the replica, as Len Atlee himself will ride it. While he hasn't been on a motorcycle for "quite a while", Atlee is looking forward to the experience.
A star in local racing during the 1970s, Atlee also raced with distinction in Europe in the 'sixties, and was. His victory in the first Castrol Six Hour Race was one of eleven starts he made in the event, competing every year up to 1980.
Atlee's son Marty became a successful racer himself, winning the Australian TT in 1996.
Organiser Peter Drakeford says he expects 'dozens' of former competitors, officials and other people associated with the famous event which ran from 1970-1983 at Sydney's Amaroo Park and from 1984-1987 at Oran Park, both now defunct.
Many of these famous names will be interviewed during the Gala Dinner at the Mitchell Shire Function Centre in Broadford on Saturday evening, April 19.
Easter 2014 will again see Broadford spring into life with action all weekend across the full range of circuits, including a new natural-terrain scrambles track. As well as the Castrol Six Hour, there will be a similar celebration of the BP Desert Races held from 1971.
