Rockstar MX Nationals. September 2008
Coming into the final round, Marmont only needed to finish inside the top 15 in the first moto to wrap up tht title, but an encounter with a fallen rider on the opening lap meant Marmont had to complete the moto with a twisted front end that he doubted would last the distance. Fortunately, Marmont's damaged Yamaha held together and he finished the moto in twelfth - enough to win the Pro Open title.
Boyd was a convincing winner in the first moto, showing he had the skill and stamina to handle Coolum's energy-sapping sand.
The second moto followed a similar pattern to the first - KTM's Michael Addison blasted to the holeshot, but was soon reeled in by Boyd. Second time around, Marmont avoided the accidents to finish a strong second behind Boyd, with Honda's Cameron Taylor third.
Despite being a multiple Supercross Champion, this championship is Marmont's first motocross title and the first for Yamaha since 2004.
Speaking immediately after the race, Marmont was still overwhelmed by the achievement. "It feels great that it has all finally come together today and now reality is starting to set in that I have actually won the Australian Motocross Championship.
"It did get a bit rough out there today and after the start I was mixed up with all the riders who could and did bring me down, however I just put my head down during the race and focused on that championship victory.
"It's my first outdoor championship and motocross has always been something I have struggled in, but with the help of the CDR Rockstar Yamaha team we have absolutely dominated the competition between myself and my team-mate."
CDR Rockstar Yamaha Team Principal, Craig Dack said the championship was the result of a plan developed at the end of '07.
"Jay showed the true form of a champion today and after getting a bad start he got caught up with the back markers and crashed. . . it was very tense watching him pick his way through the field and just hoping the damaged bike would make the distance.
"We haven't had much success in the championship over the last few years and today's result definitely puts a bit more spark in everybody's step." Dack said.
