New race formats for 2014 MX Nationals
Following a review at the end of the 2013 season, WEM says the new formats are ready to go.
Five rounds of the ten-round 2014 Monster Energy MX Nationals Australian Motocross Championship will be in the traditional 2 moto format - the same as in 2013 - with 4 classes on the card. At these rounds, the MX1 and MX2 classes will do 2 x 30 minutes plus 1 lap motos, while the MXD will do 2 x 20 minute plus 1 lap motos.
A new addition for this season - to be implemented for the other five rounds - will be 3 x 20 minute plus 1 lap motos. This format will apply to all three main classes - MX1, MX2 and MXD - competing at these rounds.
WEM spoke to some of the series' leading riders about the new formats, and here's what they had to say:
#3 MX2 Ryan Marmont (Motul Pirelli Suzuki) - "I have a full time job now and racing the new 20 minute format will be sweet. I think this is a good balance. I think we should see some great racing in the 20 minute formats".
#2 MX1 Jay Marmont (CDR Yamaha) - "I really like the 3 x 20 minute moto format, if you have a poor race you can still work hard for a solid overall, and keeping 5 traditional rounds should keep most happy".
# 3 MX1 Adam Monea (Monster Energy Kawasaki) - "I think this format will be better than the back to back format in 2012 and should produce some great racing. Having the traditional format at 5 rounds is great as-well, it's the best of both worlds, and with more point scoring races it should keep the series alive".
