Kristy Gillespie wins seventh straight State MX title
Gillespie claimed three round wins on her way to this year's championship, but at the series finale, illness struck and upon claiming the Championship with one race remaining, Gillespie sat out the final race. Gillespie claimed 5th for the finale at Horsham.
"This is going to be a memorable win," said Gillespie "It's not how I had planned to wrap up the Championship: my aim was to claim the round win at Horsham, so I was a bit disappointed I couldn't race hard to the end, but I was really unwell this weekend.
"I managed to wrap up the title with a race to go and I was just so sick I had to sit out the final race. I can't thank my family and supporters enough, I couldn't do it without them."
Team Manager Glenn Macdonald was extremely proud of Gillespie's efforts.
"Kristy certainly showed grit and determination this weekend, dragging herself out of the back of her car, her sick bed for the weekend, struggling to get to the start line. Kristy did what she felt she needed to do to seal another title.
"Everyone at GMR Motorex KTM and our associated sponsors are very proud of her efforts and her 7th consecutive state Women's title is going to be a very hard record to break in the future."
In the Sunshine State, GMR Motorex KTM's Egan Mastin took a clean sweep of three straight wins at round seven of the Sunshine State Series at Leyburn QLD on the weekend in the 13-15 years 125-150cc class. Mastin, who was recently selected to represent Australia at the FIM World Motocross Championships in Bulgaria in August, is now placed 2nd overall for the series in this class.
