Honda Gold Wing. September 2008
Such a notion was risky business in a market that defined success almost purely as performance, giving rise to the other group that pushed for more power from the GL's liquid-cooled horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine.
Eventually the Gold Wing was shaped by other considerations, not the least being touring riders that embraced the idea of a luxury bike. It was a bold idea, that was to create the most successful touring motorcycle of all time. Honda's Gold Wing series has been its most durable and profitable motorcycle line. The GL's long production run led to the current concept of continuous refinement.
The first prototype was called the M1 and was conceived as the "King of the Motorcycles".
The development of the Gold Wing was slow with few major changes until 1978. Since then the Gold Wing has been characterised by continuous improvement and technical innovation.
As long as touring riders continue to seek perfection, the established partnership between Honda and Gold Wing riders will continue to yield fresh designs. This and the constant flow of advanced technology from a variety of sources within Honda's R&D centres, guarantee that more capable Gold Wings await in years ahead.
