Harley Davidson 09 Softail line up. Dec 08
No single line of motorcycles offers more diversity in styling and attitude - from the retro darkness of the Cross Bones bobber to the iconic, broad shouldered Fat Boy and radical Rocker. The Softail family represents the fully realised custom vision of Harley-Davidson, a combination of rolling art and engineering excellence that is often copied but never matched in the world of motorcycle design.
Named for its rear suspension design, which mimics the lines of a vintage hardtail frame but offers the comfort of modern suspension that is hidden under the transmission, every Softail has clean lines, a low seat height and a rigid mounted, counter balanced Twin Cam 96B powertrain. The rigid powertrain allows tight packaging of the engine and frame and creates a solid connection between the rider and the beating V-Twin engine that moves the motorcycle, enhancing the emotional experience of riding.
Each Softail model also features 6-speed Cruise Drive trans- mission for outstanding mid-range torque and relaxed engine speed when cruising, as well as a sophisticated active intake and exhaust system. Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) enhances engine efficiency, provides crisp throttle response and easy starting, and self adjusts for changing environmental conditions to maintain performance. A classic "horseshoe" oil tank located below the seat, forward foot controls or footboards, the classic Fat Bob fuel tank, and the perfect execution of custom detail in paint and metal are design elements that define each Softail model.
2009 FXSTB Night Train
Embrace darkness on the FXSTB Night Train, with features like a blacked out power train and wrinkle black trim on the engine covers, air cleaner, oil tank, rear fender supports, drive belt sprocket and fuel tank console. The long FX front end and narrow 21-inch laced front wheel counter a beefy 200mm rear tyre on a slotted cast disc under a classic bobtail fender. Drag handle bars and forward foot controls create an aggressive posture. A new low profile front fender hugs the 21-inch laced front wheel and tyre.
2009 FLSTSB Softail Cross Bones
If riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle is a timeless experience, then the new FLSTSB Softail Cross Bones almost makes the clock stand still. The dark Cross Bones has the profile of an authentic custom bobber, a stripped down and chopped custom with raw finishes and loads of attitude. Cross Bones leads with the gloss black Springer front end and follows with other post-war styling cues, including a gloss-black air cleaner cover, sprung solo seat, half-moon rider footboards and chopped front fender. The adjustable two position pan-style saddle rides at a height of 676mm. The rider grips arm high gloss black mini ape hanger handlebars.
The gloss black oil tank features a new Willie G.-designed skull graphic. The bright chrome straight over/under exhaust with chrome dual mufflers contrasts with the dark frame and powertrain. The new Harley-Davidson FLSTSB Softail Cross Bones cuts the aggressive profile of an authentic custom bobber, but with some dark twists that deliver a wickedly fun and emotional riding experience. The Cross Bones was introduced in January at the Harley-Davidson Winter dealer meeting in San Antonio. With the retro look of a Springer front end and other post-war era bobber styling cues like a sprung solo seat, half round rider footboards, Gloss black round air cleaner cover and chopped front fender, the Softail Cross Bones rides with a Black and Polished Twin Cam 96B powertrain, 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission and truly unique Softail suspension.
"Only Harley-Davidson could do this bike," said Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson Vice President, Core Customer Marketing. "It's a motorcycle inspired as much by our early Knuckles and Pans, as by our desire to deliver innovative technology and content to make the ride today as magical and transforming as only a Harley-Davidson can. Cross Bones is a bike that makes me want to strap a blanket across the handle bar, hit the campgrounds on my next road trip and get totally in touch with what's right about this land." The Cross Bones is a bold addition to an already free spirited family.
The Softail Cross Bones takes on the road with a rebellious expression accentuated by a Gloss Black painted Springer front end with chrome springs, black bucket headlamp and black mini ape-hanger style handlebar. While the chopped front fender exposes more of the front wheel, a Bobtail fender does the same for the wide 200 mm rear tyre. Tyres with matching treads ride on steel laced wheels with Gloss Black painted rims.
The sprung solo seat, gloss black round air cleaner cover and old style half round rider footboards form a nostalgic focal point of the Cross Bones, recalling images of a classic era on this contemporary motorcycle. With two coiled springs underneath, the adjustable two position Cross Bones seat rides in modern comfort at a height of 26.6 inches. A distinctive Softail horseshoe shaped oil tank with the Harley-Davidson patent badge is located below the seat. An authentically designed five-gallon fuel tank sports a gloss black "cat-eye" styled console with accessible ignition switch and a new speedometer face.
A hand laced leather tank panel on the console compliments the sprung solo seat. A straight shot exhaust system with chrome slash cut mufflers provides optimum performance and stands out in contrast to the Cross Bones' darker components.

FLSTF Fat Boy
One of the world's most distinctive motorcycles, the FLSTF Fat Boy rolls with a size and stature second to none. The Fat Boy rides wide on a 200mm rear tyre hugged by a deep rear fender with a 17-inch front wheel and bright chrome fork nacelle. Unique premium components like bullet-hole disc aluminium wheels and fat front forks identify this Softail as the iconic Fat Boy.
FXSTC Softail Custom
The FXSTC Softail Custom puts fists in the breeze and feet forward with a chopper profile straight from the 1970's custom era. The plush king and queen seat flows up an integrated aluminium one piece back rest, providing a comfortable perch for rider and passenger. A new low-profile front fender hugs the 21-inch profile laced front wheel and tyre. Profile ape-hanger handlebars on bare knuckle risers and the Fat Bob fuel tank with embossed leather tank strap and triple laid custom graphics accentuate the cool look. A 200mm rear tyre and bobtail fender add authority to the rear end, while chrome details on the powertrain and oil tank contrast the black powder coated engine.
FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic
Rolling on new signature wide whitewall tyres, the Heritage Softail Classic receives a number of other more subtle styling changes and new components that shift this popular model in a new, even more retro direction for 2009. The beefy FL front end features a front fender and chrome headlight nacelle with clean new styling cues, while taller handlebars change the rider's profile. The fuel tank has new glass-filled, 3-D badges and is topped with a classic "cat's eye" console. Half-moon rider footboards and a large, oval foot brake pad also nod to the past. The passenger seat and backrest have been revised for more comfort, while the rider seat has new trim that matches a leather console panel, revised saddle bag trim, and new sissy bar trim. The passenger seat and backrest and the king size windshield can be quickly detached for more streamlined cruising.
FXCW Softail Rocker
The Rocker offers authentic hard tail chopper style with innovative ideas that could only be produced by Harley-Davidson. The Rockertail rear section mounts a wide fender directly to the swingarm, over a big 18-inch rear tyre. The Rocker rear fender and wheel move in unison as the Rockertail glides through 79mm of rear suspension travel. A monochromatic silver stainless steel powder coated paint scheme highlights the custom look. The solo seat is just 622mm off the ground. FXCWC Rocker CAs the chrome laden version of the Rocker, the Rocker C features an industry first ‘Trick' seat design, which hides a passenger pillion and struts under the solo seat. To accommodate a riding partner, simply lift up the solo seat and install the concealed passenger pillion over the Rockertail rear section for surprisingly comfortable two-up riding. In contrast to the more understated Rocker model, many components are chrome plated, including the head lamp and triple clamps, the handlebar riser, the fork lowers, and the tank console and speedometer. The finned aluminium oil tank, frame and swingarm are colour matched to the sheet metal, which features flame graphics.
