Gas Gas announce Moto3 programme
In the latest step in their expansion since acquisition by KTM in 2019, Gas Gas have announced they’ll be entering Moto3 in 2021 – the first ever road racing campaign for the Spanish trial and dirt bike brand.
Gas Gas will ally themselves with Jorge Martinez’s Aspar Moto3 team and field a two-rider entry on bikes that are essentially KTM RC 250 GP machines.
While acknowledging they are all about offroad as far as their production bikes are concerned, Gas Gas believe that competing in Moto3 will allow them to increase awareness of their brand on a global basis.

So why Moto3, why Aspar and why now? According to Gas Gas, Moto3 has a youthful energy about it, which they say fits perfectly with their brand, while the Aspar Team was chosen because they already run KTMs (KTM-owned Gas Gas was hardly going to pick a Honda team) and have a proven record of success in the category – Gaviota Aspar Team Moto3’s Albert Arenas currently leads this year’s FIM Moto3 World Championship.
Despite being under KTM ownership, Gas Gas say they retain a proud Spanish heritage, so choosing a Spanish team and Spanish riders for their Moto3 debut was the final piece of the puzzle.
Gas Gas team riders will be Sergio Garcia and Izan Guevara. Garcia made his debut in Moto3 last year and currently rides for the Estrella Galicia 0,0 Honda team, with one race win and three podiums to his credit. Guevara will make his Moto3 debut next year after outstanding seasons in the European Talent Cup in 2019 and Junior Moto3 World Championship this year. Garcia is 17 and Guevara just 16 years old.
“To carry the Gas Gas name into the Moto3 World Championship is a very important moment, both for myself personally and for this team,” said Jorge Martinez - Aspar Team.
“As a proud Spanish team, to be the first to work with a brand with such strong Spanish roots, to take it into the highest level of international road racing, is very, very special. 2021 is looking to be an extremely exciting season for us!
“Of course, we hope to continue the exceptional run of form we have enjoyed during the 2020 season and together with our two strong riders, Sergio Garcia and Izan Guevara, we are focused on immediately fighting for podiums and taking the GASGAS brand onto the world stage.”
COVID-19 permitting, the Gas Gas Moto3 team will make their first appearance at next year’s season opening Moto3 round at Qatar in late March.
