First 'Fashion Collection' Vespa 946 revealed
First shown in Milan in 2011, overwhelming demand for the 946 has seen Piaggio decide to release small units of the 946 annually as a limited-edition "Fashion Collection". The first collection will be designated the 'Ricordo Italiano' collection.
Styling cues - and the name - reference the original 1946 Vespa prototype, but Vespa say the also projects the Vespa brand into the future.
The new design is a an intricate construction of pressed steel with over 320 welding points, many by hand, which includes components produced from aluminium for the front guard, rear quarter panels and handlebars.
Powered by a new 125cc 3-valve fuel-injected engine, the 946 features a rear disc brake - a first for a 125cc Vespa engine, along with a longer wheelbase and new 12 inch wheels the highlight the unique frame design. The retro-style solo-sprung saddle is another key design feature which Vespa describe as 'an industrial art form'.
Additional 946 features include full LED lighting, LCD dash, horizontally mounted suspension, ABS and traction control, most of which have never been seen before on Vespa models.
Australian Piaggio and Vespa dealers recently attended a grand black tie launch for the 946, which was flown in especially for the event. Following the dealer launch, an exclusive press unveiling allowed Australia to get its first glimpse of the limited edition model.
Australia's assigned shipment has already been oversubscribed by wholesale orders, and is expected to sell out shortly.
Gavan Moody, Sales Manager for Vespa Australia' commented, "To see 946 for the first time is quite inspiring with craftsmanship and technology showcasing a totally new Vespa generation. It is quite easy to see how such energy of interest has been created around 946"
The first 'collection' will be available in classic black or white, with early indications that the following annual collections will see updates in styling and selective colours. Each 946 customer will receive an initial 'welcome gift' prior to delivery and all 946 Vespas will be supplied with an authentication disc to be fixed to the body confirming the collection year with the VIN etched onto the rear side. The handbook is also authenticated with the VIN and stamped from the factory with an authentication seal.
The 946 goes on sale in early November with an MLP of $11,990 and comes with a 2 year/unlimited km warranty.
