Biaggi bags another Championship!
The 39-year old started the day in 11th place on Imola's fast and bumpy layout. In race two, just when it seemed the championship would be kept on ice until the final round, the Suzuki, of major championship competitor Leon Haslam, died. This provided the opportunity for Biaggi to claim the title. He crossed the finish line in fifth position, giving him an unassailable 63-point lead. Both races at Imola were won by Carlos Checa (Ducati), who was fastest in qualifying before being shuffled back down the grid after a wet Superpole session. For Biaggi this was his fifth world motorcycling championship after dominating the 250 GP class from 1994-1997. Clearly enjoying the new status, Biaggi came out at the final round at Magny-Cours in France to win one of the races to cap off a successful season.
