2020 American MotoGP round cancelled
The FIM, IRTA and series organizer Dorna Sports announced on 10 July that, due to the coronavirus outbreak “and resulting complications”, the American round at the Circuit of the Americas (CotA) in Texas would not go ahead this year.
Back in March, Dorna announced that the American round would be rescheduled from its original date of 3–5 April to 13-15 November.
In Dorna’s most recent calendar update (11 June), CotA was still included, but with no dates attached. Several other rounds were similarly listed, including Argentina, Malaysia and Thailand. While Thailand and Malaysia are still possibilities, Argentina looks likely to join America and seven other rounds on the 2020 calendar to be cancelled as the FIM, IRTA and Dorna concentrate on a Europe-only return to MotoGP competition, starting at Jerez on 17-19 July.
While the 2020 CotA round is cancelled, Dorna say they are already working with the circuit promoters on a possible return for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas in April, 2021, as well as plans to have fans at the venue.
CotA first hosted a MotoGP round in 2013 and has been a happy hunting ground for Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez, who won every round at the circuit between 2013 and 2018. The only blemish on that perfect record was last year, when the Spaniard crashed out on lap 8 while leading the race.
The 2020 MotoGP calendar now looks like this:
