2018 Australian Motorcycle Market Report – Scooters
The 12.4 per cent increase in the segment last year can be attributed almost entirely to urban meal delivery services like Deliveroo and Uber Eats. If you’re in any city or decent-sized town, you’ll have noticed the growth of these services. You’ll have also noticed most of those doing the actual delivering are motorcyclists. The boom in sales of the non-scooter CB125E can be partly attributed to this phenomenon, too.
Piaggio and Vespa used to dominate this segment, with Piaggio’s Fly 150 the top seller back in 2015 and 2016. More recently, scooters from the Japanese brands have gained the upper hand, with Suzuki’s Address 110 the top-seller last year, but Honda’s NSC110 DIO achieved the Number One spot in 2018 thanks to a 92.6 per cent sales increase.

Honda’s other mass market LAMS scooter, the MW110, fell 30 per cent in 2017, but rebounded with an 11.3 per cent gain in 2018; a trend reflected in most models.
Notable new arrivals in the Top Ten include Yamaha’s XMAX 300 and the newcomer GPD150A (aka NMAX 155).
With more options, Honda was the top brand in this category with 1,304 sales in 2018, followed by Vespa with 884 and Piaggio with 863.
Of those Italian scooters, the aforementioned Fly 150 saw the smallest sales increase of all models in the Top Ten, while Vespa’s GTS300 improved and their Primavera 150 turned around a dismal 2017 (down 18.3 per cent) with a 26.2 per cent gain last year.
