The result, which was the biggest drop across all motorcycle market segments, also arguably exposed the status of scooters as 'luxury' items and not the legitimate daily transport they are in many other countries. That aside, the prospective scooter buyer is still spoilt for choice here in Australia, with many brands, styles and engine capacities to choose from. Price, it seems, is still a factor in the buying decision, as brands like Honda and Kymco outsold the more expensive Vespa, although Vespa sales did rally late in 2009.

For this guide, we have featured the volume brands from the European and Japanese manufacturers, along with some of the larger and more reputable Chinese imports. Unless indicated otherwise, all models shown have CVT automatic transmission.

Kawasaki & Kymco team up
Global motorcycle heavyweights, Kymco in Taiwan and Kawasaki in Japan, have entered into a joint venture to produce high-performance engines. Under the contract, Kymco and Kawasaki will invest US$10 million to form Changzhou Kawasaki and Kwang Yang (Kymco) Engine (CK & K) to produce high performance general gasoline engines, with implications for the expansion of Kymco's motorcycle range.

Piaggio's Zip 50 and Zip 100 four-stroke scooters have a new stablemate, the Piaggio Zip 50 two-stroke. Some owners have expressed a desire to enjoy the extra 'zip' that the two-stroke power plant can offer but still do the right thing when it comes to the environment.
