With its fuel-injected, liquid cooled powerplant at the centre of the package, the Raptor is built to dominate its surroundings, from tight bush to wide open trails.
The Raptor does this with a potent mix of awesome acceleration and broad torque curve, as well as a state-of-the-art steel front/aluminium rear chassis (with detachable subframe) which is the lightest in its class. A number of Raptor components are taken from the competition-spec YFZ450 model, giving the Raptor genuine racing ability. Travel on the suspension is substantial - 256mm front & 230mm rear. The piggyback style front shocks (derived from the YFZ450) feature high and low speed compression adjustability, plus rebound and preload adjustability, just like the rear. Combine that with a comfortable seat and excellent rider ergonomics and you've got a package that's as comfortable to ride as it is enjoyable.
Brakes are also lifted from the YFZ450, and feature twin aluminium dual piston discs at the front with a single disc at the rear. The engine package features a number of lightweight components: conrod; crankshaft; and forged pistons. This enables the 686cc engine to rev all the way to 9000rpm. Dual counter balancers keep the engine running smoothly, while the fuel injection system ensures consistent engine performance across a range of conditions, temperatures and elevations.
The race-bred transmission (with YZ-spec ratchet shifter) is a five speed, so there's gearing to suit all requirements, plus a reverse. Styling is typical Raptor - aggressive and striking. Special Edition models feature bold red & white plastics and graphics, while the standard 700R rolls in traditional Yamaha Racing blue. It isn't just brute power and aggressive looks, though. Some well thought out additions, like the parking brake safety feature, make the Raptor a practical all purpose ATV option.
