Seller's Description
The previous owner of this 1972 Norton Commando bought it in the late 70s and was riding it for 40+ years. He was a competent self-taught mechanic and did what he needed to keep it running well and looking great. It won numerous trophies in the 90s and 00s at bike shows in Sydney and the NSW North Coast. When it came to me it had shattered gearbox casing. I sourced a replacement housing and rebuilt the gearbox with new bearings and seals. Then I started it. It ran exceptionally well and had clearly been well set up and tuned. All electrics and instruments worked fine. See video. But when riding it home after getting a blue slip – disaster. The engine ceased. On inspection I found the oil lines on the oil filter housing had been reversed, so oil was not circulating. I’ve carefully pulled down the engine, wiping everything clean, and put small parts in labelled plastic bags so things don’t get lost. The left big end bearing had ceased, bent the conrod and broken the piston skirt. I’ve sourced a second-hand conrod and cleaned up the crank journal pretty well. It's now for sale as is. Why aren’t I putting it back together? 1. I need the $$. 2. I’m short on time. 3. I want you to be confident the rebuild has been done properly rather than taking my say-so. Getting this running again is a relatively straight forward re-assembly job if you have some mechanical ability. You’ll need to spend about $600 on parts (list below) and perhaps have the crankshaft reground (if you think that’s needed). Or use as a base for full restoration. You actually get two bikes in one! It comes with both interstate and roadster tanks, side covers and seat. The interstate paintwork (blue/silver) is in very good to excellent condition. The roadster paintwork (black/gold) is fair to good. There’s also a fibreglass tank, fairing, miscellaneous spares, manuals and some tools. I’ve got a blue slip (dated 19/7/2023 – expired for rego, but shows engine/frame numbers are fine) This is a 50 year old bike that has been used and ridden. (odometer has likely been around the clock) It is in very good condition for its age, but it is not pristine. Look through photos in the ad carefully to see condition.
