Triumph, the official engine supplier to the FIM Moto2 World Championship since 2019, is set to introduce a new powerplant to the category. Offering more power and torque than the current engine, as well as improved airflow and greater reliability, the new engine will be introduced for the 2027 Moto2 season.
The new engines will be of a similar three-cylinder design as the original, which was developed from the powerplant used in the Street Triple 765 RS. In recent years, the 765cc race engine has seen updates to the gearbox, extracting more power. With seven seasons and almost two million kms of racing, along with a substantial amount of rider feedback, Triumph and its partners in Moto2 have been responsible for almost 100 all-time and race lap records in the category.
Compared to the current engine, the new engine delivers more air flow into the cylinders. A new cylinder head, completely redesigned valvetrain, higher flow ports and a new combustion chamber design produce a higher compression ratio. The result is a slight increase in capacity (that’s yet to be revealed), a claimed 6 per cent increase in power and more torque throughout the rev range. The triple’s crankcases and all internal components have also been redesigned to cope with the additional power and torque, ensuring maximum reliability.
Impressively, Triumph has been able to achieve all this while also reducing engine weight by 2kg.
Triumph’s new race engine will require Moto2’s chassis manufacturers – Kalex, Forward and Boscoscuro – to develop completely new frames to suit the revised air intake and mounting points. This work began a year ago, with the new engine and chassis package due to make its on-track debut later this year.
