GEAR ON TEST– KING OF THE CAPE
King of the Cape
Tested – previewed – by Phil Suriano
A trip up the Cape York Peninsula should be on the bucket list for every serious motorcyclist. Many of you have no doubt already done the Cape and a bunch of you who have done that motorcycling adventure probably did it with Roy Kunda of Cape York Motorcycle Tours.
The longest-running motorcycle tour company in Australia, Cape York Motorcycle Tours were the world’s first motorcycle tour company to be Eco-Certified and have maintained that rating for over 10 years. They’ve won multiple tourism and business awards, too.

Roy’s taken an estimated 4,000+ adventure-seeking riders to the tip of Australia since Cape York Motorcycle Tours started, but like many in the motorcycle tour business, Roy had virtually no business since the coronavirus lockdowns came into effect. So, at the urging of his wife Renae, Roy spent his downtime writing a book on his 35+ years’ experience of riding the Cape and 30 years spent leading tours.
‘King of the Cape’ covers many of Roy’s experiences on two wheels in Far North Queensland, some of the people he’s met – from rookie riders to MX guns and Grand Prix winners – along the way and some of the hilarious things he’s seen and done. The book is also a guide for those looking to ride the Cape themselves, with Roy sharing the tips and tricks he’s learnt over the years.

The chance to actually ride to the tip of Cape York may be some time away, but at least we can experience motorcycling in Far North Queensland vicariously through Roy’s upcoming book!
Due for release prior to Father’s Day, King of the Cape is available to pre-order direct from Cape York Motorcycle Tours.
