Seller's Description
The Triumph Speed Twin was first introduced at the 1937 UK National Motorcycle show, but all production bikes were actually 1938 models. The Speed Twin was a sensation in its day because it was lighter and more powerful than many singles available at the time. Triumph boasted that it was no wider than a single. The amaranth red paint scheme was also considered daring at a time when many British motorcycles were painted black.
The first Speed Twins had a 6 stud top end which was found to be problematic and was replaced by a stronger 8 stud arrangement in later models. Original 6 stud first year models are now rare due to engine blow-ups from the weaker stud arrangement. Surviving 6 stud models are more valuable than later 8 stud versions due to the lower survival rate.
In 1939, the Speed Twin was revised with not only an 8 stud head but a larger tank. Many Triumph enthusiasts consider the earlier small tank models are more attractive as the later tank overwhelmed the compact layout.
The Speed Twin being auctioned is a first year of production 6 stud model with the desirable smaller tank. It was restored in the UK and has been stored as an “investment” bike from several Australian owners since it was imported. As a result, it has not had any substantial mileage since restoration. It runs well and could go on club registration relatively easily.
